Using telegrams and love letters to teach World War II
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and National History Day's Normandy Institute is trying to make sure the enormous sacrifices are not forgotten. This summer, 15 student-teacher pairs from around the country are honoring servicemen from their own communities. Their journey begins by looking for information locally, and is followed by a trip to Washington, D.C., where they learn more from experts and by examining military records at the National Archives. The trip concludes with a visit to Normandy, where they see the places they've been reading about and deliver graveside eulogies for their fallen servicemen.
